For the past few years I’ve been keeping my hair short but recently I decided to start growing it out. I haven’t had actually long hair in years and I completely forgot how much of a pain in the ass growing your hair out is, especially when it’s just long enough to get in your way but not long enough to do anything with. All of this isn’t even getting into the dysphoria aspect. I just want to have an androgynous hairstyle that’s long but I really don’t know what to aim for and how to avoid it being too fem/too masc. Does anyone have any tips? Any suggestions for what to tell/show to my friend who’s a stylist and cuts my hair? My hair is very straight and kind of a mullet currently. Just at my eyes in the front and down to the base of my neck in the back, the sides go a little past my jaw. I also have an undercut. My goal is to be androgynous and at least try to avoid the constant misgendering I get from trans and cis people alike.
If you have a good relationship and trust with your stylist, I honestly recommend just trying to talk with them and doing your best to explain what you’re looking for. They tend to have a better understanding of face shapes, framing, and styling.
I know my salon, one I’ve been going to for over a decade, has different stylists that specialize in different cuts and looks. They often consult each other and brainstorm with clients that might want something new or unconventional.
For anyone looking for a stylist, I recommend finding places that advertise themselves as safe spaces. You’ll have such a gentle and affirming experience, and they’ll often be extra patient and understanding of your anxiety and goals!
I do have a good relationship with my stylist, and I did try to do that last time but it got really awkward and I genuinely didn’t know what to ask them for. I kind of just said that I wanted to grow my hair out, wanted the front to be shorter, and wasn’t 100% sure beyond that. I’ll probably try telling them the stuff I’ve said in this post next time I go but I just wish I had some sort of clear goal. I look online for inspiration but I’ve struggled to find images of people that have any kind of longer hairstyle I’d want and have the hair texture for.
I can so understand that! I find it extra hard when trying to visualize how certain styles will look with my particular face too. I’ve brought inspiration to mine and she’ll take the time to explain how my features might not flow the same way while suggesting alternatives.
I think trying one or two more times, including the details you’ve shared here, is a good idea 🩷 other than that, Pinterest and IG are great places for inspiration. It might help you find images of styles that have aspects of what you’re looking for and see if they can bring them together (this length, with that shape, and this silhouette, etc)
That’s fair, I’ll definitely try that. I just haven’t had any luck looking online for inspiration, all of the images I see when looking up androgynous long hair are either women with not terribly androgynous hair styles or the same exact 3 men with long curly hair that kinda look like Timothee Chalamet. I despise ig with a passion but I’ll try checking there for people with the hairstyle I like, and I haven’t touched pinterest in years so I might make an account and check there.
i had a pixie cut in different lengths for a long time, when i was younger. i loved it. you can start cultivating it from short hair. especially its a good starting point for growing out fully: your front hair are longer. you can put them behind your ears, later in a bun. plus it look super cute. :))) (– all the way. from super short to the point where your fronthair touch your claviculae.)
still there will be that intetmediate phase, where your front hair do whatever.
I previously had a pretty short haircut with the sides and back shaved and have been growing it out from that. I don’t mind buns but I honestly don’t really enjoy putting my hair behind my ears. I want to keep my front hair relatively short, kind of like a mullet and very much not like super noticeable bangs, but beyond that I don’t know
There are about a million award shows with red carpet reviews.
Someone has to have approximately ‘your’ face.
A picture will give your stylist a place to start.
I’m not sure what to aim for though or the names of hair styles. There aren’t a ton of nonbinary people on tv specifically with long hair, aiming for an androgynous look. I like the idea of it being tied back, maybe braided, with the front not being too short or having obvious bangs, almost like Ed from fma. It’s worse now that ai has flooded the internet since not even with an ai block list can I stop duckduckgo from showing some ai people when I look up hairstyles. Also when looking up androgynous long hairstyles I pretty much exclusively get either images of fairly fem women or the same 3 Timothee Chalamet looking men with long curly hair. I think people have been attempting to guess my gender more often since I’ve begun growing my hair out too which has been making me feel nauseous.
